Guided paddle on the River Arun

Join Phil Plume, one of the most qualified SUP leaders in the country, for a guided paddle on the upper section of the River Arun in West Sussex.

Phil has led multi-day expeditions across the remote lochs and coastlines of Scotland, and has also competed on the national SUP racing circuit. This tidal-assisted trip departs from beneath the shadow of the 11th-century castle in the medieval market town of Arundel.

Travelling with the flow of the river, we’ll wind our way through the heart of the South Downs National Park, passing through some of the most picturesque landscapes in Sussex. As you pass between the chalk downs rising on either side of the river, you’ll arrive at Amberley, where you’ll stop for cake and a hot drink made on the Kelly Kettle. After your break, you’ll continue under the bridge that carries the South Downs Way across the river, through Pulborough Brooks Nature Reserve, and on to your exit point at Swan Bridge.

The absence of busy roads gives the valley a sense of peace and has allowed wildlife to flourish. The river’s floodplain creates a rich wetland habitat perfect for a variety of birds. Keep your eyes peeled for herons, the blue flash of a kingfisher darting from branch to branch, kestrels hunting along the banks — and if you’re really lucky, Gavin the seal may even pop up to say hello!

This trip isn’t just about enjoying the beauty of the river — we want to help you paddle efficiently and safely on your own adventures, not just when you’re with us.
